LG OLEDB8P series

Best high-end TV for the money

Editors’ Rating : 8.7
Design : 9Features : 10Performance : 10Value : 6
OLED TVs are the picture quality kings, and this is the 2018 OLED TV to buy. But if you want the best deal, look for a 2017 OLED or wait until later in the year for the Black Friday price drop.

TCL 6 series (2018 Roku TV)

Best TV for the money, period

Editors’ Rating : 8.7
Design : 9Features : 10Performance : 10Value : 6
No TV we’ve ever tested offers this much picture quality for this little cash, and its Roku TV operating system is our hands-down favorite. The TCL 6 series wins the 2018 TV value race at 55- and 65-inches.

LG OLEDC8P

The 2018 picture quality king, by a nose

Editors’ Rating : 8.7
Design : 9Features : 10Performance : 10Value : 6
In our comparison tests this C8 beat the image quality of the B8 above, but just barely. How barely? We don’t think the C8 is worth the extra money over the B8, which is why it’s ranked lower on this list overall.

Vizio M-Series (2018)

Second-best picture for the money

Editors’ Rating : 8.7
Design : 9Features : 10Performance : 10Value : 6
Aside from the TCL above, no TV offers this much picture for this little cash. Vizio’s affordable M is high-performance and well-equipped, and if you want a 70-inch size (which TCL doesn’t offer), it’s the best value this list.

Samsung Q8 series (2018)

Best and brightest non-OLED picture

Editors’ Rating : 8.7
Design : 9Features : 10Performance : 10Value : 6
With searing light output and superb local dimming performance, the Samsung Q8F delivers awesome image quality in light and dark rooms alike, as well as potent HDR. And for videophiles afraid of OLED burn-in, it’s a great choice.

Vizio P-Series (2018)

Best picture for the money at 75 inches

Editors’ Rating : 8.7
Design : 9Features : 10Performance : 10Value : 6
The Vizio P-Series isn’t worth the extra money over the TCL 6 series and Vizio’s own M-Series at the 55- and 65-inch size. But if you want a wall-busting 75-inch set with an excellent image, it’s our favorite of the year.

Sony XBR-X900F series

Best 2018 alternative to TCL and Vizio

Editors’ Rating : 8.7
Design : 9Features : 10Performance : 10Value : 6
Sony’s most affordable entry in the full-array local dimming race can’t match the value of those brands, but it does cost less than the Samsung Q8 and offers almost the same level of style and brand cachet.

Vizio E-Series 2018

Best budget TV picture quality

Editors’ Rating : 8.7
Design : 9Features : 10Performance : 10Value : 6
All of the TVs listed above this one have better picture quality…and they all cost more too. But when it comes to genuinely cheap televisions, nothing outperforms the Vizio E.

TCL S405 series Roku TV (2017)

Best 55-inch budget smart TV

Editors’ Rating : 8.7
Design : 9Features : 10Performance : 10Value : 6
Roku is our favorite platform for streaming apps like Netflix, and it’s even better baked into the TV. Image quality on this 4K TCL can’t beat the Vizio above, but it’s perfectly fine for most, especially at this price.

TCL S305 series Roku TV (2017)

Best smaller budget smart TV

Editors’ Rating : 8.7
Design : 9Features : 10Performance : 10Value : 6
For sizes smaller than 55 inches, and for people who value smarts over image quality, these non-4K Roku TVs make the most sense. They range from 28 to 49 inches, the picture is “good enough” and the built-in smarts are superb.
