Sony XBR-X900E series

Midpriced runner-up with great style

Design : 8Features : 9Performance : 8Value : 8
Those Vizio and TCL TVs might be great deals with awesome image quality, but they can’t hold a candle to this Sony for pure panache. And yes its image quality is just as excellent as those others, and the price is entirely reasonable.

TCL S405 series Roku TV (2017)

Best built-in smart TV system

Design : 8Features : 9Performance : 8Value : 8
Roku is our favorite platform for streaming apps like Netflix, and it’s even better baked into the TV. Image quality on this 4K TCL won’t blow you away, but it’s perfectly fine for most, especially at this price.

TCL S3750/FP110 series (Roku TV)

Best built-in smart TV system

Design : 8Features : 9Performance : 8Value : 8
Roku is our favorite platform for streaming apps like Netflix, and it’s even better baked into the TV. Image quality on this TCL won’t blow you away, but it’s perfectly fine for the price.

Vizio E series 2017 (43- to 55-inch)

Best budget TV for picture quality

Design : 8Features : 9Performance : 8Value : 8
It can’t match the image quality of its bigger brothers, but Vizio’s smaller E series sets do deliver a better picture than the TCL above. If you prize image quality over streaming in your budget TV, this is a good choice.

Vizio E-Series 2016

Best budget TV picture quality

Design : 8Features : 9Performance : 8Value : 8
We like Roku TVs better thanks to their superior conveniences, Smart TV and feature set, but if you prioritize picture over that stuff and have a tight budget, get an E. Just make sure it’s the right one.
