TV
LG OLEDC7P
Best picture quality, money no object
Design : 9 – Features : 10 – Performance : 10 – Value : 6 –
OLED TVs stand head and shoulders above TVs that use LED LCD technology, and the C7 has the best picture we’ve ever tested. It’s still very expensive but the price has come down a lot already this year — and should drop even further.
TCL P series Roku TV (2017)
Best 55-inch non-OLED TV
Design : 9 – Features : 10 – Performance : 10 – Value : 6 –
With truly excellent image quality and the best Smart TV system on the market, this TCL is a legitimate threat for best TV value of 2017. Unlike chief competitor Vizio, however, it’s only available in a 55-inch size (for now).
Vizio M-Series (2017)
Best mid-priced picture for the money
Design : 9 – Features : 10 – Performance : 10 – Value : 6 –
No other TV offers this much picture for this little cash. Its value proposition is among the best we’ve ever seen on a TV this high-performance and well-equipped, and unlike the TCL above, it actually comes in multiple sizes.
Sony XBR-X900E series
Midpriced runner-up with great style
Design : 9 – Features : 10 – Performance : 10 – Value : 6 –
Those Vizio and TCL TVs might be great deals with awesome image quality, but they can’t hold a candle to this Sony for pure panache. And yes its image quality is just as excellent as those others, and the price is entirely reasonable.
Sony XBR-A1E series
Best TV if you have money to burn
Design : 9 – Features : 10 – Performance : 10 – Value : 6 –
With basically the same picture quality as the C7 OLED TV above, The Sony A1E only makes sense for the few lucky TV shoppers who really like its styling, the Sony name, and have an extra grand or so to spend.
Samsung MU9000 series
Best midrange TV design
Design : 9 – Features : 10 – Performance : 10 – Value : 6 –
The MU9000 costs thousands less than Samsung’s QLED model below but offers very similar picture quality. And like the higher-end Q, this is one of the flat-out most beautiful TVs you can buy.
Samsung QNQ7F series
Best TV design
Design : 9 – Features : 10 – Performance : 10 – Value : 6 –
With an “invisible” wiring solution and super-sleek looks from the back and the front, Samsung’s QLED TV takes the aesthetic crown. But its image quality, despite some strengths, isn’t among the best we’ve seen.
Vizio E series 2017 (60- to 80-inch)
Best budget TV picture quality
Design : 9 – Features : 10 – Performance : 10 – Value : 6 –
We like Roku TVs better thanks to their superior conveniences, Smart TV and feature set, but if you prioritize picture over that stuff and have a tight budget, get an E. Just make sure it’s at least 60 inches.
TCL S405 series Roku TV (2017)
Best built-in smart TV system
Design : 9 – Features : 10 – Performance : 10 – Value : 6 –
Roku is our favorite platform for streaming apps like Netflix, and it’s even better baked into the TV. Image quality on this 4K TCL won’t blow you away, but it’s perfectly fine for most, especially at this price.
Vizio D series 2017 (D65-E0 and D55-E0)
Best no-frills, picture-first big TV
Design : 9 – Features : 10 – Performance : 10 – Value : 6 –
The E series above is a bit better thanks to HDR and its Chromecast-friendly feature set, but if you don’t care about that, the D series will save you even more. Again, however, we can only recommend the largest sizes.
